Question
How do I determine the right price range?
Answer
To determine price range: clarify needs and must-have dimensions first, set a budget cap, check category mainstream and historical prices, filter within budget; do not let promotions or social proof raise it.
Steps
- Clarify needs and must-have dimensions: What problem are you solving, which features or quality are must-haves. See Need consistency.
- Set budget cap: Hard upper limit based on what you can afford and the priority of this purchase; avoid being anchored or keeping up. See Cognitive budget.
- Check category mainstream prices: Typical price band for products that meet your needs in this category—use as reference but keep your cap as the limit.
- Filter within budget: Use price range to filter candidates, then compare by dimensions; do not look at above-budget models first and then “stretch–the budget.
Why set budget first
Looking at products first exposes you to anchoring and social proof; setting budget first then filtering supports need consistency and cognitive budget control.
